Disability Abuse Response Team (DART)
Disability Abuse Response Team (DART)
Helping Ourselves Prevent Emergencies (H.O.P.E.) is proud to host the Disability Abuse Response Team (DART) for Prince of Wales Island. Located in Southeast Alaska, our mission is to ensure that individuals experiencing disabilities have equal access to safety, support, and justice when facing domestic violence or sexual assault.
What is the Disability Abuse Response Team (DART)?
DART is a multi-disciplinary collaborative effort specifically designed to aid people who live with disabilities and have been victims of interpersonal violence.
In rural Southeast Alaska, navigating the path to safety can be complex. The DART program at H.O.P.E. brings together local resources to provide specialized advocacy that addresses the unique barriers faced by the disability community.
Why DART Matters
Individuals with disabilities are often at a higher risk for abuse and face significant hurdles when seeking help. These can include:
Unique Vulnerabilities: Abuse may include the withholding of essential medications, assistive technologies, or personal care.
Barriers to Reporting: Fear of losing a primary caregiver, communication barriers, or the fear of not being believed can prevent survivors from coming forward.
Geographic Isolation: On Prince of Wales Island, physical distance from services can compound these challenges.
Our DART Services
Through the Disability Abuse Response Team, H.O.P.E. provides:
Accessible Advocacy: Support services tailored to the specific physical, cognitive, or communication needs of the individual.
Safety Planning: Specialized plans that account for mobility aids, service animals, and caregiver transitions.
Collaborative Response: We coordinate with healthcare providers, local law enforcement, and social services to ensure a seamless and respectful support system.
Rights Education: Empowering individuals with disabilities to understand their rights and the resources available to them in Southeast Alaska.
A Community Commitment
Addressing violence against people with disabilities requires a shared commitment from the entire Prince of Wales community. DART works to bridge the gap between disability services and domestic violence prevention, ensuring that "supportive services for all" truly means everyone.
