Sexual Assault Response Team (SART)
Every Survivor Heard, Believed, and Supported.
Sexual assault impacts individuals of all ages and backgrounds. At HOPE, our Sexual Assault Response Team (SART) provides a coordinated, compassionate, and survivor-centered response. We are dedicated to trauma-informed care that empowers you to make informed decisions about your healing and your path toward justice.
What is SART?
A Sexual Assault Response Team (SART) is a multidisciplinary group of trained professionals including advocates, forensic medical examiners, law enforcement, and legal professionals who work together to provide a seamless, supportive experience.
By coordinating our efforts, HOPE ensures that survivors do not have to navigate the medical, legal, and emotional aftermath of an assault alone.
Our Goals:
- Prioritize the Survivor: Providing immediate crisis intervention and emotional support.
- Comprehensive Care: Facilitating medical exams and forensic evidence collection.
- Coordinated Response: Ensuring a sensitive, joint approach between advocates and investigators.
- Accountability: Properly documenting and preserving evidence to support the pursuit of justice.
For Survivors: What You Need to Know? What should I do immediately after an assault?
- Ensure your safety. If you are in immediate danger, call 911.
- Seek medical care. You have the right to a forensic medical exam (often called a “rape kit”). This can be done to check your physical health and collect evidence, regardless of whether you choose to report to the police.
- Call HOPE. Reach out to our advocates. We can meet you at the clinic or hospital to provide confidential support and advocacy.
Do I have to report to the police?
No. You have the choice. In many jurisdictions, you can opt for Anonymous Reporting. This allows you to receive a forensic exam and have evidence collected while keeping your personal information withheld from law enforcement. You can choose to formally report at a later date if you wish.
How can a HOPE Advocate help?
- We provide emotional support: A steady presence during a difficult time.
- We can be with you during medical exams, police interviews, and court proceedings.
- We can help you navigate protective orders and personal safety.
- We can help you access counseling, emergency shelter, and victim compensation.
The HOPE SART Members are a team of dedicated professionals committed to your recovery.
- Advocates: Your primary point of contact for emotional and practical support.
- Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners (SANEs): Medical professionals specially trained in forensic evidence collection and trauma-informed medical care.
- Law Enforcement Partners: Officers trained in victim-centered investigation techniques.
- Legal Professionals: Experts who ensure your rights are protected throughout the legal process.
